Oklahoma Onion Burgers
Requiring just five ingredients including the meat and hamburger buns, this unassuming recipe packs plenty of flavor thanks to sliced onions and American cheese. The recipe makes four burgers, but could easily be doubled for a larger crowd or so you'll have leftovers for the remaining buns in the pack.
Ingredients
-
1 lb. (80/20) ground beef
-
2 medium-size (10 oz. each) sweet onions
-
2 tsp. kosher salt
-
4 (1-oz.) slices American cheese
-
4 potato hamburger buns, split (such as Martin’s)
Directions
Directions
-
Divide ground beef:
Divide ground beef into 4 round balls (4 ounces each). Set aside.
-
Slice onions:
Using a mandoline or a knife, thinly cut onions into paper-thin slices (about 2 cups).
-
Cook hamburger patties:
Heat a large cast-iron skillet or griddle pan over high for 1 minute. Place hamburger balls on skillet, and sprinkle evenly with salt.
-
Top each hamburger ball with a 1/2 cup sliced onions, and gently press onions into tops of balls.
Using a grill press or a wide heavy spatula, smash each ball into thin (1/4-inch-thick) patties. Cook for 2 minutes.
-
Flip patties, and add a slice of cheese to each patty; top each with a bun top. Top each bun top with a bottom bun half facing down. Cook until patties are browned, onions are slightly browned, and a thermometer inserted into thickest portion of meat registers 140°F for medium, 3 to 4 minutes.
-
Carefully remove from skillet, and place bottom buns on plates; top with patties and buns tops.
